Start at the actual beginning
Nicotine is C10H14N2, ten carbons, fourteen hydrogens, two nitrogens. Melsens worked that formula out in 1843. It is worth asking where those atoms came from, because the answer is not a metaphor.
The hydrogen is original. It was forged in the first minutes after the Big Bang, roughly 13.8 billion years ago, and essentially none has been made since. Fourteen atoms in every nicotine molecule are as old as matter itself.
The carbon and the nitrogen could not exist yet. There was no process in the early universe that could make them. They had to wait for stars, carbon fused in stellar cores three helium nuclei at a time, nitrogen cycled out of the reactions that let massive stars burn. Then those stars had to die and throw the results outward.

The word is 190 years old. The molecule is around a hundred million. The atoms in it are 13.8 billion.
None of which makes anything safe, and none of which is an argument for anything. It is simply the accurate order of events, and it means that when we say the story of this plant did not begin with Jean Nicot, we are not being romantic. We are being literal, and we are not even starting early enough.

Every name we have is brand new
Our story page traces a chain we are genuinely fond of. Laid against any evolutionary timescale, though, it is almost comically recent:
Not one of those names is five centuries old. Meanwhile the plant was in use across the Americas for thousands of years before any European saw it, and the chemistry the plant is doing is older than that by a margin no one can picture.
The etymology is the shallow end. It is a record of who arrived late and got to write the label.

Why would anything evolve to enjoy a pesticide?
Here is the puzzle that a group of researchers, Roger Sullivan, Edward Hagen and Peter Hammerstein, put in front of the field in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2008, and it is a good one.
Nicotine is not a treat the plant is offering. It is a neurotoxin the plant manufactures to punish things that eat it. Same for caffeine, same for most of the compounds humans use recreationally. These molecules exist because they made insects and herbivores stop chewing.
So the paradox, stated plainly: the most widely consumed drugs on earth are substances that evolved specifically to be aversive, and we seek them out, cultivate them, trade them, and write poems to them. Something in that chain does not obviously add up.
the standard answer
The hijack, and the assumption underneath it
The dominant explanation is the hijack hypothesis: drugs are an accident. Reward circuitry evolved for food, sex and social bonding, and these molecules happen to fit the locks. On this account there is no relationship at all, only a vulnerability being exploited by a modern environment.
It is a reasonable idea and it explains a great deal. But Hagen and colleagues point at the assumption sitting underneath it, which is rarely said out loud: the hijack model requires a drug-free past. It needs an ancestral environment without these compounds, so that a reward system could evolve without ever encountering them.
And there was no such past. Plants have been making neurotoxins for something like a hundred million years. Whatever our lineage was doing, it was doing it in a world already full of these molecules.
The critique goes further, and it is sharp: most drug researchers do not treat the hijack hypothesis as a hypothesis at all. They treat it as a truism that needs no supporting evidence, which is precisely the condition in which an idea stops being tested.
the alternative
Regulation, not hijack, and "drugs are bad for pathogens"
Hagen's counter-proposal is that the brain did not get hijacked; it evolved to regulate neurotoxin intake, to hold a dose in the band where costs are tolerable and any benefit is captured. A thermostat, not a broken lock.
And what benefit? The candidate that gives the model its bluntest title, Drugs are bad… for pathogens, is that compounds tolerable to a large mammal can be lethal to something much smaller sharing its body. Worms. Parasites. On this account an ancestral human with a mild chemical habit may have carried a lighter parasite load than one without.
This is not armchair theorising. Hagen's group went and looked, publishing 2016 fieldwork on cannabis use among Aka foragers of the Congo Basin and its possible relationship to helminth infection. Testable, tested, and it is about substances generally rather than nicotine specifically.

What this does not mean
This is the chapter that decides whether the rest of the page was worth writing, so we are going to be blunt.
This is not a health claim, and it is not evidence that nicotine is good for you. It is a hypothesis about ancestral environments, about people with heavy parasite burdens, chewing plant material, in conditions that describe nobody reading this. A pouch on a desk in 2026 is not a leaf in the Congo Basin, and an office worker is not carrying the helminth load the argument turns on.
It is also a minority position. The hijack model remains the mainstream view. Hagen's alternative is published, serious and testable, and it is still the challenger. Anyone telling you evolution has settled this is selling something, including, if we ever do it, us.
And an explanation is not a permission slip. Even taken at its strongest, the argument explains why the appetite exists. It says nothing whatsoever about whether any modern product is safe, and nicotine is addictive regardless of how it got into our story.
The evolutionary case is about the hunger, not the purchase.
The musing, then
We named it. We did not invent it.
Put the two halves side by side and something clicks into place. On one side, four centuries of Europeans confidently naming a plant: Nicot's parcel, Linnaeus's genus, the poets' goddess, the chemists' alkaloid. On the other, a body of research suggesting the relationship those names are pointing at is vastly older than any of them, and possibly written into us.
Which reframes our own founding story. Nicotia was never the beginning of anything. It was one more attempt, quite late in the day, to put a word around something people were already doing and had been doing for a very long time. The word kept getting picked up and put down because the thing kept being there , and naming is just the surface where that becomes visible.
It also explains why the tradition we found in the poets reads as affection rather than novelty. Rowlands and Southey were not discovering a vice. They were describing something that already felt old to them.
So: not a heritage we are borrowing. A heritage that was already ours, that got renamed by whoever was holding the parcel, and that we are taking back the honest way, by saying what it is, what it costs, and what nobody actually knows.
